Planning ahead for the Tasmania school holidays? Tasmanian government-school students start Term 1 on Thursday 4 February 2027 and finish Term 4 on Thursday 16 December 2027.
As a former teacher and a parent, school dates are practically programmed into my DNA. I like to add them to the calendar early so I can plan family time, school holiday activities and childcare before everything starts booking out.
The dates below apply to Tasmanian government schools and colleges. Catholic and independent schools may use different dates, so check directly with your child’s school before making non-refundable plans.

We will add the complete 2028 calendar as soon as it is published. Until then, avoid relying on estimated dates when booking flights, accommodation, childcare or activities that cannot be changed.

College teachers commence on Monday 25 January 2027 and finish on Friday 10 December 2027.

Tasmania student-free days in 2027
The Tasmanian Government has not yet published the separate professional learning days for 2027.
Professional learning days are student-free days when teachers undertake training, planning and assessment work. Dates may also differ by region or year level.
Check the Tasmanian Government term dates page and your school’s calendar or newsletter for confirmed dates before arranging childcare.
You can also visit our Australian pupil-free day guide for information about student-free days around Australia.
Do Catholic and independent schools use the same dates?
Catholic and independent schools often plan their calendars around the Tasmanian government-school dates, but they do not always follow them exactly.
Start dates, finishing dates and student-free days can vary between schools. Always check your child’s individual school calendar before booking travel, accommodation or holiday programs.
Planning the Tasmania school holidays
Once the dates are safely in the calendar, the next job is working out what everyone is going to do.

My teacher-and-parent advice is to check popular holiday programs early. The activity everyone wants is usually the one that fills while we are all still thinking we have plenty of time.
