Why do state schools and private schools have different holidays?
When it comes to school holidays, state and privates schools often have a different assortment of school holiday dates, especially over the summer months. Though, have you ever wondered why?
The Victoria State Government establishes all the school term and holiday dates for the public schools focused on keeping all 4 terms as even as possible and striving for a 10 week term. That being said, this isn’t possible at some points in the year due to where Easter sits in the calendar year.
On the other hand, the process slightly differs for private schools. Independent or catholic schools set their school holiday dates based on these state school holiday dates. Although, between each private school, the holiday dates will often differ.
Before the 2023 school year kicks off, remember to research your child’s independent or Catholic school’s holiday dates before adding them to your school calendar, just to be sure.

Victoria student free days 2023
The school holidays VIC aren’t the only occasion where kids get a day off, with student free days also excusing kids from a day at school. Because of this, parents should also be aware of these dates and remember to add them to their calendar.
What are student-free days? Student free days are orchestrated for staff professional development. On these days, the teachers and staff cover topics like the school’s strategic direction, code of conduct, fire training, and more.
For families, this means a day off school for the kids. To avoid being caught off guard by these dates, consider getting in touch with the school.
Each year schools receive 4 student-free days (when student instruction does not occur) for professional development, school planning and administration, curriculum development and student assessment and reporting.
The first day of Term 1 each year must be a student-free day in all government schools to allow for appropriate planning to take place for the arrival of students.
School councils have the flexibility to schedule the remaining 3 student-free days each year to meet local school needs.
From 2023, one of the 4 student-free days each year must be nominated for assessment and reporting
Private school holidays Victoria 2023
The key difference between state and private schools is that private schools are independent. They aren’t managed by any state or national governments and are privately funded, which can influence their school holiday dates.
Although they are privately managed, independent and catholic schools set their school holiday dates based around public school holidays – with a few minor variations.
Since each private school is managed independently, school holiday dates are bound to differ between schools. Before adding any school holiday dates to your calendar, be sure to check your children’s private school for their specific school holiday dates.
In the meantime, here are the school holiday VIC dates for private schools in 2023.
